'Opposition not united as before, open to alliance': AIUDF MLA on Rajya Sabha polls

Ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections for two seats in Assam, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam has underlined the importance of opposition unity, admitting that his party alone lacks the numbers to secure a seat.

Speaking to the media, Islam stated, "We have only 15 MLAs. We don't have enough MLAs to contest the Rajya Sabha alone. If the opposition unites, then we can win one seat easily. Presently, the opposition is not united as it was before... Our party cannot do anything alone."

Islam further indicated that the Congress, as the largest opposition party, could take the lead in forging a broader alliance. "If Congress president Gaurav Gogoi wants to unite all opposition under one umbrella, then it can happen," he said.

His remarks highlight the current fragmentation within the opposition bloc in Assam, even as Rajya Sabha polls approach. While the BJP-led alliance holds a majority in the state assembly, a united opposition front could pose a credible challenge for at least one of the two seats.

As political consultations continue behind the scenes, all eyes are now on the Congress leadership and whether it will initiate talks to bring parties like AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and others onto a common platform.
