Opposition will oppose UCC because 18 of 19 MLAs are of 'Miya' origin’: BJP MLA

BJP MLA Sushanta Borgohain, on May 25, defended the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, stating that the ruling party was fulfilling a key electoral commitment and asserting that the legislation would strengthen women’s rights and ensure legal uniformity across the state.

Speaking on the issue, Borgohain said the BJP had promised during the previous Assembly term that if voted back to power, it would introduce the Uniform Civil Code in the first session of the Assembly.

“We promised in the last Assembly that whenever we come back to power, we will bring the Uniform Civil Code in the first session of our Assembly. As promised, our Chief Minister has tabled the Uniform Civil Code today,” Borgohain said.

Describing Assam as a socially and culturally diverse state with multiple communities and religions, the BJP legislator said a common legal framework would help ensure equality and security.

“In a sensitive state like Assam, where people from different communities and religions reside, we should move in a uniform way so that Assam and Assamese people remain secure,” he said.

Borgohain stated that the proposed legislation aims to establish a common legal structure applicable across the state.

Commenting on opposition to the proposed bill, Borgohain alleged that opposition parties would resist the move and linked his criticism to concerns surrounding practices such as triple talaq.

Opposition obviously will oppose this bill because out of 19 MLAs, 18 are of 'Miya' origins and they practised with this three talaq, which is very dangerous... This UCC will definitely secure them (women), support them so that this kind of injustice does not happen again..."

He said the Uniform Civil Code would strengthen protections for women and help prevent injustice in personal matters.

“This Uniform Civil Code will definitely secure women and support them so that this kind of injustice does not happen in their personal lives,” he said.

The remarks come amid political debate over the proposed Uniform Civil Code, an issue that continues to draw differing opinions from political parties and social groups across Assam.
