Orunodoi aims at women’s empowerment, poverty alleviation, says Assam BJP MLA

Assam BJP MLA Ritu Baran Sarmah has highlighted the state government’s Orunodoi scheme as a key welfare initiative aimed at women’s empowerment and poverty alleviation, saying nearly 40 lakh women across the state are benefiting from the programme.

Speaking about the scheme, Sarmah said Orunodoi provides monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,250 to eligible beneficiaries, including widows, separated women, unmarried women and Divyangjan.

He said the assistance should not be viewed merely as a beneficiary-oriented welfare measure, as the monthly support has a significant impact on families dependent on it.

“One of the main purposes is the empowerment of women and the alleviation of poverty. The Orunodoi scheme targets both of these goals,” Sarmah said.

According to the MLA, more than 38 lakh beneficiaries have already been covered under the scheme, while the government plans to bring additional eligible beneficiaries within its ambit.

Sarmah also said the implementation of Orunodoi has been taken up seriously by the state government and that the scheme has reached beneficiaries across Assam. He claimed that other states have also been adopting similar models based on their respective requirements.

Highlighting the government’s focus on women’s economic empowerment, Sarmah referred to the Lakhpati Didi initiative, under which financial assistance ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 is being provided in phases to women and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).

The support, he said, is intended to help women and SHGs establish businesses, strengthen their livelihoods and become financially self-reliant.
