Over 1,000 politicians switch to UPPL in major Assam political realignment

The United People's Party Liberal witnessed a significant boost to its ranks on Thursday as more than 1,000 members from rival political parties formally joined the ruling party during a mass induction ceremony in Kokrajhar.

The defections, held at Rupnath Brahma Field in Ramfalbil, represent one of the largest single-day political migrations in recent Bodoland Territorial Region history. The event signals growing consolidation around the UPPL ahead of upcoming electoral battles.

BTR Chief Executive Member and UPPL President Pramod Boro led the induction ceremony, flanked by heavyweight party figures including Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma and Lok Sabha MP Joyanta Basumatary. The presence of such senior leadership underlined the strategic importance the party places on expanding its grassroots network.

UPPL General Secretary Raju Kumar Narzary coordinated the joining process, while former BTC deputy chief Kampa Borgoyari also attended the proceedings. The mass defection comes as political parties across Assam are repositioning themselves in an increasingly competitive landscape.
