“Pakistani agent Gaurav Gogoi go back” slogans erupt during MP’s visit to Karbi Anglong

Gaurav Gogoi—Member of Parliament, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha—faced a divided reception during his two-day visit to Karbi Anglong district.

While Congress workers extended a warm welcome in Deithor and Bokajan, locals in Santipur under Borpathar Police Station staged vocal protests against him.

In Santipur, protestors held placards reading “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back”, “Pakistani Agent Gaurav Gogoi Go Back”, and “Congress Party Murdabad”, reflecting visible resentment among certain sections of the local population. The protest is seen as a reflection of the heightened political tension in Assam, especially after  Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent allegations linking Gogoi to Pakistan—an accusation that has fueled sharp political debates.

Despite the hostile response in Santipur, Gogoi received enthusiastic support from Congress party workers at the Deithor Mandal Congress Committee and Bokajan Block Congress Committee offices. Local Congress leaders and workers gathered to express solidarity and reaffirm their commitment to revitalising the party's presence in the district.

Gogoi’s visit comes at a critical juncture, as the Congress party grapples with setbacks, including a recent panchayat election loss in Jorhat, his home constituency. His outreach efforts aim to strengthen grassroots connections and reinvigorate the party's base ahead of the crucial 2026 Assam Assembly elections.

While the protests underscore the political challenges Gogoi faces amid rising polarisation, his visit signals the Congress party’s ongoing push to remain relevant and responsive in Assam’s evolving political landscape.
