Pawan Khera accuses Assam CM of large-scale corruption, warns of threat to state’s identity
Congress leader Pawan Khera launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing his government of widespread corruption and political manipulation that he claims is undermining the cultural and democratic fabric of the state.
Addressing the media on November 28, Khera alleged that Assam’s global identity—shaped by its rich culture and icons like noted singer Zubeen Garg, is being overshadowed by “rampant corruption, drug trafficking, cattle smuggling, and criminal syndicates.” He remarked that “ABCD ka matlab badal gaya hai,”
Criticising the state government for failing to resolve long-standing concerns of tea garden workers, Khera accused the Chief Minister of misusing power and resources while neglecting the welfare of indigenous communities. He further claimed that the government is allegedly bringing in outsiders to influence electoral processes and voter lists, warning that the upcoming elections may witness “bus aur train mein bhar bhar ke voters” being mobilised to weaken the political rights of indigenous Assamese people.
Highlighting concerns over growing political interference, Khera stated that Assam’s identity and democratic rights are under threat, urging citizens to remain vigilant and safeguard their representation.
He also endorsed the rise of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, saying his leadership marks a new generational shift reminiscent of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s era of development. Khera alleged that the current Chief Minister is excessively dependent on the police and the Election Commission for political survival, claiming that without such institutional backing, “he cannot move freely.”
Accusing the government of handing over tribal land to major corporate houses. He also demanded that the Chief Minister disclose the details of wealth acquired by his family over the past five to seven years, questioning the sources of income and property expansion.
Referring to past Enforcement Directorate and CBI investigations involving Sarma, Khera questioned how the CM was “relieved” of cases after switching to the BJP, calling it a classic example of “washing machine politics.”
