Pedestrian killed in Assam's Barkhola road accident; protesters block Silchar–Jaintia–Kalain road

Tension gripped Assam's Cachar district after a pedestrian was killed in a road accident at Barkhola, prompting angry locals to block the Silchar–Jaintia–Kalain road and demand the immediate arrest of the accused motorcyclist.

 

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 9 pm on July 4 in the Harinchhara area of Barkhola, when a speeding motorcycle allegedly hit a pedestrian, identified as Sadhu Bauri.

 

The critically injured victim was initially rushed to Barkhola Hospital by local residents with the assistance of Barkhola Police. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries at around 1 am while undergoing treatment.

 

Following news of his death, enraged residents staged a road blockade on the Silchar–Jaintia–Kalain route, demanding the immediate arrest of the motorcyclist responsible for the accident. The protesters also demanded the presence of the Cachar Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police at the protest site.

 

Barkhola Police said an investigation has been launched into the incident. Officials have identified both the motorcycle and its rider, who is reportedly a resident of Nutan Basti in Ujan Nagar. Police said efforts are underway to arrest the accused at the earliest.

 

The incident triggered a tense situation in the area, following which additional police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. Further investigation is in progress.
