'PM Modi must visit Assam': Ajmal demands Rs 10,000 crore flood relief package

AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal on August 6 demanded that the Centre declare Assam's flood situation a national disaster, sanction a Rs 10,000 crore relief package, and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the flood-affected state.

 

Addressing a gathering at Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district, Ajmal said the devastating floods in Sivasagar had united people across communities.

 

"The Sivasagar floods have united the people of Assam. Hindus and Muslims have stood together. Even now, some people are trying to divide Hindus and Muslims, but I will not allow that to happen," he said.

 

Criticising the Centre's response, Ajmal said, "Ministers should not come to Assam just to witness the floods. Their visit alone will not help. Assam needs a Rs 10,000 crore package, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must visit the flood-hit areas."

 

He further demanded that the Centre officially declare Assam's floods a national disaster and sought Rs 10 lakh compensation for every flood-affected family to rebuild their homes.

 

Taking a political swipe ahead of the Assembly elections, Ajmal remarked, "Hum tujhe yaad rakhenge, election toh phir aayega."

 

Highlighting AIUDF's relief efforts, Ajmal claimed that he would help construct 50,000 houses for flood victims, distribute five lakh mekhela chadors to women, extend financial assistance of up to Rs 50 lakh for school students, and continue medical support. He also claimed that medicines worth Rs 3 crore had already been supplied to flood-affected areas.
