Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, December 18 announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on December 20 and 21, describing the visit as “highly significant, symbolic, and substantial” for the state.

During his Guwahati visit on December 20, the Prime Minister will inaugurate the new terminal building of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at enhancing air connectivity and passenger capacity in the Northeast.

On the same day, PM Modi will unveil the statue of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister, paying tribute to the legendary leader’s contribution to the state and the nation.

In a historic first, the Prime Minister will also visit the BJP State Headquarters in Guwahati, becoming the first serving Prime Minister to do so. He is scheduled to participate in a special programme, ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’, interacting with 25 meritorious students aboard a ferry on the Brahmaputra River. The Prime Minister will hold discussions with the students while travelling across the river, marking a unique outreach initiative.

PM Modi will also visit the Sahid Smarak, built in memory of the martyrs of the Assam Agitation, where he will offer tributes to those who laid down their lives during the historic movement.

On December 21, the Prime Minister will travel to Namrup in Upper Assam, where he will lay the foundation stone of a 12-lakh metric-ton urea manufacturing plant, a major industrial project expected to boost fertiliser production, employment, and economic growth in the region.

Highlighting the importance of the visit, Chief Minister Sarma said the state is eagerly awaiting the Prime Minister and expressed confidence that the two-day visit will leave a lasting impact on Assam.
