'PM Modi wishes to spend more time at exhibition, will visit right after Jhumur performance': Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 20 announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's schedule for a significant two-day visit to Guwahati, highlighting its blend of cultural celebration and economic initiatives.

"PM Modi will arrive in Guwahati on February 24 at 5 pm," Sarma said, outlining the Prime Minister's itinerary. "Following his arrival, he will witness the Jhumur performance at Sarusajai Stadium."

The cultural spectacle will bring together nearly 10,000 artists from 27 districts of Assam, including 5,399 female dancers, 2,175 male dancers, and 2,074 musicians. This unprecedented gathering marks the largest-ever showcase of traditional Jhumur dance, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Assam's tea industry.

Sarma revealed Modi's particular interest in the accompanying exhibition. "The Prime Minister specifically requested more time at the exhibition, so he will visit immediately after the performance, spending about 45 minutes there, rather than waiting for the next day."

The visit continues on February 25, with Modi scheduled to inaugurate Advantage Assam at 10 am before departing at noon.

Minister Ashok Singhal had earlier emphasised the historic nature of the event, noting the significance of the Prime Minister's presence at this large-scale celebration.

The Jhumur Binandini programme, part of the broader Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative, aims to showcase the state's cultural heritage while attracting investment opportunities. The event is expected to draw dignitaries and industrialists from across India and beyond, marking one of Assam's most significant cultural-economic events in recent years.
