Police brutality allegations surface in Assam's Bordumsa, massive protests erupt

Fresh allegations of police brutality have rocked Assam’s Bordumsa town, where several officers, including the Officer-in-Charge of the local police station, are accused of assaulting a young man in custody. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and protests from local residents.

According to reports, Biswajit Saharia, Officer-in-Charge of Bordumsa Police Station, along with Second Officer Dutta and another official identified as Deka, allegedly summoned Sanjeev Moran, a resident of Mohong village, to the station on Saturday. There, the youth was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault, including torture using hot chili paste — a practice condemned internationally as a form of inhuman treatment.

Sources indicate that the confrontation stemmed from an argument between Moran and police officials during Panchayat election voting. Following the dispute, the youth was reportedly called to the station the next day, where the alleged assault took place.

Moran is currently undergoing treatment at a local medical facility, and his condition is reported to be critical.

The incident has sparked a wave of anger in the area. On Sunday, large crowds gathered to gherao the Bordumsa Police Station, demanding immediate suspension and strict action against the officers involved. Protesters condemned what they described as "inhuman and barbaric" behavior by law enforcement personnel and called for a judicial probe into the matter.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations or the demands raised by the protesters.
