Potholes, mud render Assam’s Kaliabor rural road unmotorable

A rural road under the Public Works Department (PWD) in Assam’s Kaliabor has been reduced to a series of water-filled potholes and muddy stretches, making it virtually unmotorable and causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

The road connecting Hatibandha to Dalapani village from the four-lane road leading to the Kaliabhomora Bridge has developed large potholes at several places. During rains, the potholes turn into pond-like craters, while the road surface has become muddy and difficult to navigate.

Students of Chulung High School, several primary schools and private educational institutions, besides local residents who use the road daily, are among those bearing the brunt of the deteriorating road condition.

Although a few vehicles continue to ply on the stretch, commuters say travelling on the road has become risky. The large potholes and muddy surface have raised concerns over the possibility of accidents, particularly for two-wheelers and pedestrians.

Residents have alleged that despite the severely damaged condition of the road, the PWD has not taken adequate steps to repair or reconstruct the stretch.

They have urged the department to take immediate measures to restore the road and ensure safe connectivity for schoolchildren, commuters and local residents.
