Pradyut Bordoloi meets Amit Shah, eyes Assam polls after quitting MP seat
Former Congress leader and Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi on March 18 announced that he has resigned from his Lok Sabha seat following his decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, adding that he may contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
Speaking after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Bordoloi said the senior BJP leader had advised him to consider entering the state electoral fray.
“I have just resigned from my Lok Sabha seat. I met Amit Shah. He has been very kind and is fully aware of the situation. He suggested that I should contest the Assembly elections in Assam. I have to take a call and will decide on it,” Bordoloi said.

His resignation from Parliament and entry into the BJP mark a significant political shift in Assam ahead of the Assembly elections. Bordoloi, a two-time MP from Nagaon and a former MLA, is seen as an influential leader in upper Assam, and his potential candidature could reshape electoral dynamics in key constituencies.
The development comes amid a series of high-profile defections from the Indian National Congress in the state, raising concerns within the party over leadership erosion just ahead of the polls.
While the BJP has not officially announced his candidature, Bordoloi’s statement indicates that discussions are underway at the highest level, and a final decision on his electoral plans is expected in the coming days.
