In a significant boost to Assam’s biodiversity, the state has recorded the presence of the Mithun (Bos Frontalis), a revered bovid species, in the hilly regions of Dima Hasao.
This majestic animal, indigenous to the Himalayan foothills of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and other northeastern states, holds a special place in Indian culture, with mentions dating back to the epic Mahabharata.
The sighting of the Mithun in Assam marks a new chapter in the state’s wildlife diversity, showcasing Assam’s flourishing natural habitats.
The Assam Forest Department has been lauded by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for its exemplary efforts in conserving the state’s forests, making such wildlife expansions possible through diligent protection and management.
Taking to X, CM Sarma wrote, "Assam adds another faunal friend to its biodiversity 🙌
In another beautiful addition to our animal kingdom diversity, we have recorded presence of Mithun (Bos Frontalis) in the Hilly areas of Dima Hasao. This bovid species, native to Bharat's Himalayan foothills in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, etc. and which finds mention in the Mahabharata, has now a new home in Assam. Kudos to our @assamforest Dept for its excellent work in protection, preservation and management of our treasured forests"
