'Preserve Assam’s forests without cutting trees’: Jadav Payeng after receiving Assam Nakshatra Award 2026

Padma Shri awardee and environmentalist Jadav Payeng, widely known as the “Forest Man of India,” was honoured with the Assam Nakshatra Award 2026 at a programme held in Assam’s Tezpur on the occasion of the 10th foundation anniversary of Axomiya Suraksha Manch.

The award was presented at the Sahitya Sabha Bhawan in Tezpur in recognition of Payeng’s lifelong contribution to environmental conservation and afforestation.

Speaking to media persons after receiving the award, Payeng said he had written to the Prime Minister regarding forest conservation in Amchang as well as across India. He urged the government to take concrete steps to protect forests and ensure development without cutting down trees.

Expressing concern over environmental degradation, Payeng said it is unfortunate that Assam, known for its rich greenery, is facing threats to its forests. He appealed to people to plant more trees and refrain from felling existing ones.

He also stressed that a nation cannot progress without the development of its language, art, and culture. Emphasising the importance of mother-tongue education, Payeng said children should be taught in Assamese, as studying in one’s mother language supports mental growth and contributes to the overall development of the country and its people.
