Priyanka Gandhi arrives in Guwahati for two-day visit, kicks off Assam poll push with Kamakhya visit

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee and MP from Wayanad, landed in Guwahati, Assam on February 19, for a two-day visit aimed at accelerating the party's preparations for the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Soon after landing at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Borjhar, Priyanka Gandhi headed straight to the revered Kamakhya Temple to offer prayers. Following her temple visit, she will proceed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters at Rajiv Bhawan to chair a series of screening-related meetings.

Priyanka Gandhi, who serves as chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee and is the MP from Wayanad, is overseeing what party leaders described as an “unprecedented and structured” screening exercise in Assam. Senior party functionaries said this marks the first time the Congress is undertaking such a comprehensive and consultative candidate selection process in the state.

Assam Congress leaders indicated that Priyanka is expected to make multiple visits in the coming months to review progress, assess ground feedback and ensure closer coordination between the state unit and the central leadership.

The party is aiming to complete the screening process at the earliest, with indications that the first phase of the Congress candidates’ list could be released by the end of February after consultations with the central leadership. State leaders asserted that the Congress is ahead of other parties in terms of organisational readiness and candidate identification as the election battle gathers momentum.
