Property dispute turns fatal: Son arrested for allegedly killing mother in Assam's Cachar

A 65-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her son over a property dispute in Assam's Cachar district on the afternoon of August 4, while another woman sustained serious injuries after she reportedly tried to intervene.

 

The incident took place around 2 pm at Bhatgram village under Kalain Police Station, sending shockwaves across the locality.

 

According to police and local sources, the accused, identified as Altai (40), allegedly attacked his mother, Jarina Begum (65), with a sharp weapon inside their house, inflicting multiple injuries. She succumbed to her injuries on the spot.

 

Preliminary reports suggest that the family had been embroiled in a long-standing dispute over the sale of their ancestral property. The accused allegedly became enraged after his mother opposed the sale and attacked her when other family members were away from home.

 

Hearing screams from the house, neighbours rushed to the spot to rescue the victim. During the commotion, the accused allegedly attacked another woman with the same weapon, leaving her critically injured. She has been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

 

Local residents overpowered the accused immediately after the incident and handed him over to the Kalain Police.

 

Police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
