Protests erupt in Assam over Jamiat chief’s call for CM’s resignation, AANYSU burns effigy of Mahmood Madani

A fresh political storm has erupted in Assam after Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind President Mahmood Asad Madani reportedly demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The remarks have sparked strong criticism from several indigenous organizations, who have condemned the statement as an attack on the democratic mandate of the state’s people.

On Sunday, August 24 evening, the All Assam Nath Yogi Students’ Union (AANYSU) staged a vehement protest against Madani’s comments. Demonstrators set fire to an effigy of the Jamiat president, marking their outrage and rejection of his demand.

Addressing the media during the protest, AANYSU president Arvinda Nath said that such remarks were unacceptable to the indigenous communities of Assam.

“Assam is not a ground for external political interference. We, the indigenous people of Assam, will never accept statements that undermine our democratic choices and leadership. Our land, rights, and identity must be protected,” Nath asserted.

The incident has further fueled tensions, with indigenous groups rallying behind the call to safeguard Assam’s political and cultural sovereignty from what they perceive as unwarranted external influence.
