A political storm has erupted in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district following a controversial Facebook Live session by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi.
His remarks during the livestream — made in front of a house under construction in Diphu, which he suggested belonged to Karbi Anglong Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang — have sparked outrage among several tribal student bodies.
On Monday, the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA), Dimasa Students’ Union (DSU), Rengma Naga Students’ Union (RNSU), and Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) jointly staged a protest in Diphu, accusing Gogoi of misleading the public and indulging in “cheap politics.” The organisations clarified that the house in question is being built by CEM Ronghang’s son, who is a contractor by profession.

In a strongly worded press conference, the student bodies lambasted Gogoi for attempting to discredit tribal leadership. “During Congress rule, the tribal communities were neglected. Now that they are progressing, Gogoi seems unable to tolerate it,” the groups said. They challenged him to conduct similar Facebook Live sessions in front of his own residence in Guwahati or those of Congress MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain.
Warning of possible repercussions, the organisations said any further attempts to malign the tribal community could result in a ban on Gogoi’s entry into the district.
“We did not expect such behaviour from a Member of Parliament,” the groups added. “He should focus on real issues like health, education, and infrastructure rather than making insinuations about personal property.”
The incident has deepened political tensions in the region and drawn sharp lines between tribal organisations and the Congress leadership in Assam.
