Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council hosts Assam’s first indigenous folk instrument playing festival

In an effort to preserve and promote the rich folk traditions and indigenous musical instruments of Assam’s ethnic communities, the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council (RHAC) organised the first-ever “Indigenous Folk Instrument Playing Festival 2026” at the Council Secretariat premises in Dudhnoi on Monday evening.

The festival was formally inaugurated by RHAC Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, who ceremonially cut the red ribbon to mark the opening of the event. 

The inaugural lamp was lit by RHAC Chairman Sonaram Rabha, Vice-Chairperson Alka Rabha and All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) president Motilal Baksuk.

Addressing the media, Tankeswar Rabha said the initiative was aimed at safeguarding traditional folk instruments of indigenous communities while also creating a platform to present these art forms at a global level. He added that the Council plans to expand the festival beyond its jurisdiction in the coming years to reach a wider audience.

Artistes representing the Rabha, Bodo, Garo, Hajong and several other communities presented captivating performances, showcasing the region’s diverse cultural heritage. The audience was enthralled by the display of traditional instruments, reflecting the deep-rooted musical traditions of the communities.

A wide array of indigenous instruments featured in the festival, including Kham, Serja, Gamani, Kara-Nal, Kaliya and Dhol, Badungdupa, Brangchi, Sigaring and the A·chik Drum, highlighting the cultural richness and musical diversity of Assam’s indigenous groups.
