Rahul Gandhi doesn’t like the Northeast or its culture: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 27 criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his repeated refusal to wear the traditional gamosa or Angavastra, describing it as a disregard for the culture of the Northeast.
Speaking to the media, Sarma said, "It was a custom for the people of the North East to offer gamosa or a different kind of traditional Angavastra. Rahul Gandhi refused to wear that Angavastra, and he has not done so for the first time yesterday. He does that repeatedly; whenever he comes to Assam, he refuses to wear a gamosa. It has become a norm for him now."
The Chief Minister went further, stating, "We can summarise that Rahul Gandhi doesn't like the Northeast. He doesn't like Northeast culture. The people of Assam and the people of the Northeast should give him a befitting reply."
The remarks come amid heightened political sensitivity in the region, where cultural symbols like the gamosa are seen as emblematic of local identity and respect for tradition.
