Rare rotating water column spotted over Brahmaputra in Assam’s Barpeta

A rare weather phenomenon resembling a waterspout was observed over the Brahmaputra in Assam’s Barpeta district on Monday, August 24 ,with a rotating column of water rising from the river near Paharpur in the Baghbar area. The phenomenon was captured on camera and has since drawn attention on social media.
 

The unusual sight was witnessed in the Paharpur area of Chenga, where the water column appeared to rise vertically from the river and rotate in the air.
 

The phenomenon prompted curiosity among local residents, with some speculating that it could be an indication of an impending natural disaster.
 

There is, however, no established scientific basis to link such a phenomenon to earthquakes. Whether the formation seen over the Brahmaputra was a waterspout or another atmospheric phenomenon would require assessment of the video and local weather conditions by meteorological experts.
 

A waterspout is essentially a rotating column of air and water droplets that forms over a body of water, generally in association with particular atmospheric conditions. The occurrence of such a phenomenon does not, by itself, indicate an impending earthquake.
 

The unusual formation over the Brahmaputra has meanwhile become a talking point in Baghbar and neighbouring areas, with the footage circulating widely on social media.
