Resentment erupts in Assam's Morigaon over ‘misleading’ reports on cultural centre renovation

Tensions surfaced in Assam’s Morigaon following allegations of news reports circulating 'misinformation' about a cultural centre located in Ward No. 2 under the Morigaon Municipal Board, leading to confusion and public outrage.

Residents and local stakeholders have strongly objected to what they describe as 'distorted reporting' surrounding the renovation of the cultural centre, a project initiated with financial support from MLA Ramakanta Deuri. According to community members, the narrative being projected in some quarters attempts to malign the legislator’s developmental initiative without verifying facts.

The cultural centre in Ward No. 2 has long served as an important socio-religious hub for the locality. It regularly hosts Naam-Prasanga (devotional congregations), Bhagavat discussions, and various spiritual discourses, drawing participation from residents across age groups. Over time, the building had reportedly fallen into a dilapidated condition, raising safety concerns and affecting its regular use.

Responding to repeated appeals from local residents, MLA Ramakanta Deuri allocated Rs 5 lakh for the renovation of the centre. The funds were utilised to restore and upgrade the infrastructure, giving the institution a renewed and improved structure. Community members say the renovation has revitalised the space and restored its central role in social and spiritual activities.

However, controversy erupted after certain media reports allegedly portrayed the initiative in a negative light, sparking confusion among sections of the public. Supporters of the MLA argue that the coverage lacked factual verification and was politically motivated. They maintain that the project was undertaken strictly in response to public demand and in line with developmental priorities.

Local residents have termed the alleged misinformation campaign as “unfortunate” and “unwarranted,” asserting that developmental initiatives should not be politicised.
