Residents raise alarm over alleged gas leak from ONGC pipeline in Assam's Nazira village

Residents of Bhakat Gaon in Assam's Nazira subdivision have expressed concern over an alleged gas leak from an underground pipeline operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), warning that the situation could pose a serious safety risk if left unaddressed.

The reported leak was detected at Dithaipukhuri Silakuti Bhakat Gaon, where ONGC pipelines carrying crude oil and natural gas pass through agricultural land.

Villagers alleged that gas has been continuously escaping from the pipeline for several days, creating fear among residents and farmers in the area. They claimed that the leak has raised concerns about the possibility of an accident and have urged the authorities to intervene immediately.

Local farmers said they have been reluctant to work in nearby fields because of safety concerns arising from the reported gas emission.

Residents also alleged that inadequate monitoring and maintenance of underground pipelines could be responsible for such incidents. Some villagers drew parallels with previous industrial accidents in Assam and called for urgent preventive measures.

The villagers have appealed to ONGC and the district administration to inspect the site, assess the extent of the leak and take necessary steps to ensure public safety.

There was no immediate response from ONGC on the allegations.
