Residents stage symbolic 'tribute' to executive engineer over dilapidated Assam's Silchar Medical road

Residents of the Meherpur area along the Silchar Medical Road staged a unique protest on July 29 against the deteriorating condition of the road, offering a symbolic "tribute" to the Executive Engineer to express their frustration over the prolonged neglect.

As part of the demonstration, the protesters erected a symbolic structure in the name of the Executive Engineer and paid floral tributes, draping it with a traditional gamosa to highlight what they described as the authorities' failure to repair the road despite repeated appeals.

According to the protesters, several representations have been made to the concerned department over the poor condition of the road, but no meaningful action has been taken. They alleged that large potholes and severe waterlogging during the monsoon have made commuting hazardous, causing daily inconvenience to pedestrians, patients, ambulances and other motorists.

The residents demanded that the road be repaired immediately to ensure safe and smooth movement of traffic, particularly given its importance as an access route to the medical college and hospital.

The unusual protest drew the attention of passers-by, many of whom recorded videos of the demonstration on their mobile phones. However, no official response had been issued by the concerned department at the time of filing this report.
