Rivers Boko and Singra overflow as heavy rain batters Assam, crops and houses damaged
The floodwaters from the Boko and Singra river have overflowed their banks, creating extensive damages in areas in Assam's Boko. Tributaries in the region have been flowing above the danger level, causing widespread flooding.
Several farms, homes and school classrooms are flooded, with villages like Khatla, Shimila, and Tarabari from the Singra River severely impacted. Currently, the vehicular movement in the area has been stopped.
The rivers, originating from neighbouring Meghalaya, have particularly affected Belpara in Boko and Shimila village under the Boko Revenue Circle. Hundreds of hectares of farmland and vegetable crops in Belpara, Bakarapara, Raipara, and other villages near the Boko railway station are submerged.
Earlier this month, Belpara village experienced flooding after the Boko River's bank was damaged.
On June 7, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika inspected the site, and discussed the situation with locals, and directed authorities to construct a dam to block the river water.
Field Officer Pritam Kalita of the Disaster Management Department said that the village headmen are providing regular updates on the flood situation, and the department is inspecting the affected areas.
Boko Revenue Circle Officer Divas Bardoloi stated that the Kamrup District administration is ready to offer all necessary assistance to those affected.
