Road in North Karimganj develops cracks within three months; irregularities alleged in CM’s road project
Allegations of serious irregularities have surfaced over the construction of a road under the Chief Minister’s road development scheme in the West Kanishail area of North Karimganj constituency in Sribhumi district, after the newly built road reportedly developed cracks and damage within just three months of completion.
According to local residents, the demand for a paved road in the area had remained pending for years. In 2024, under the Chief Minister’s road scheme, Rs 41.30 lakh was sanctioned for the construction of a 500-metre road. The contract for the project was awarded to contractor Abdun Nur.
Although the work was scheduled to be completed in 2024, locals alleged that delays by the contractor led to the project being finished only in 2026.
However, residents claimed that within three months of completion, the road started deteriorating. Cracks have appeared on the surface, portions of the road edges have collapsed, and bitumen layers are reportedly peeling off. Locals also alleged that soil was not properly filled along the road shoulders, contributing to the damage.
Residents further claimed that despite lodging complaints with the departmental engineer and the contractor, no corrective measures have been taken so far.
Aggrieved by the situation, local people have submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner and appealed to the Chief Minister for intervention. Residents said that after waiting for decades since Independence to get a paved road, they are now urging authorities to reconstruct it and ensure durable infrastructure for the area.
