Robber injured in police encounter in Assam's Bongaigaon

A suspected robber was injured in a police encounter at Jogighopa in Assam’s Bongaigaon district late Friday night, August 21, police said.

The injured man was identified as Borat Ali of Krishnai in neighbouring Goalpara district. He had been arrested earlier in connection with a robbery case and was being taken from Krishnai to Jogighopa Police Station when the incident occurred.

According to police, Ali asked to get down from the police vehicle near Naranarayan Setu on the pretext of urinating. He allegedly took advantage of the darkness, attacked a police constable and attempted to flee.

Police fired three rounds while trying to stop him, with one bullet hitting Ali in his right leg. He was subsequently apprehended.

Ali was initially taken to the Chalatapara Community Health Centre and later referred to Bongaigaon Medical College for further treatment.

A police constable, Kamal Ray, also sustained injuries in the alleged attack.

Police said a country-made pistol was recovered from Ali's possession.

The incident took place during the investigation into a robbery reported at Kherpuji in Jogighopa on August 19, when six members of the Khasi community from Nongstoin in Meghalaya were allegedly assaulted and robbed of more than Rs 5 lakh while they had travelled to the area to purchase an old vehicle.

Jogighopa Police subsequently launched an investigation and arrested Ali from Krishnai on Friday afternoon, identifying him as the alleged mastermind of the robbery.
