Rongjali Bwisagu celebrated with traditional fervour in Assam's Kokrajhar

Rongjali Bwisagu, the most cherished festival of the Bodo community, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and traditional fervour in Kokrajhar under the central initiative of the All Bodo Students’ Union.

The celebration took place at the playground of the Kokrajhar Government Higher Secondary and Multipurpose School, where members of ABSU, community leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and residents gathered in large numbers to mark the arrival of the Assamese New Year.

The programme began with a traditional gesture of respect, as ABSU members sought blessings from elders by touching their feet, symbolising reverence and the continuation of cultural values. Leaders of various organisations and members of the media were warmly welcomed with the presentation of the traditional aronai, a handwoven scarf that holds deep cultural significance in Bodo society.

The festive atmosphere came alive with the rhythmic sounds of traditional musical instruments such as the Sifung (bamboo flute), Kham (drum), and Serja (string instrument). Performers and participants enthusiastically joined in the open Bwisagu dance, celebrating the spirit of unity, cultural pride, and new beginnings.

Rongjali Bwisagu marks the onset of the spring season and the Bodo New Year. The festival is celebrated with music, dance, community feasts, and rituals that honour elders and nature, reflecting the harmonious relationship between people and their environment.

The event in Kokrajhar not only showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Bodo community but also highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous traditions while fostering social harmony and togetherness. The celebrations concluded on a joyous note, reinforcing the enduring cultural identity of the region and its commitment to passing these traditions on to future generations.
