Roumari Lake springs to life as migratory birds flock to Assam wetland
Roumari Lake (Roumari Beel), the tranquil yet ecologically crucial floodplain wetland located near Malegarh village in Jogighopa, Bongaigaon has come alive with the arrival of migratory birds this season. The wetland, spread across nearly 70 hectares, is emerging as one of Lower Assam’s most vibrant habitats for avian diversity.
According to local observations, around 29 species of birds are regularly sighted at Roumari lake, with several migratory species now joining the resident population as winter sets in. The lake has long been regarded as a haven for birdwatchers, but the recent influx of migratory birds has further enhanced its ecological significance. Roumari lake’s distinctive basin-shaped structure is dynamically connected to the mighty Brahmaputra River. During the monsoon floods, nutrient-rich water flows into the wetland, sustaining a rich and constantly evolving aquatic ecosystem. This seasonal replenishment supports a wide range of aquatic plants, particularly Hydrilla, which not only enhances fish quality but also attracts numerous bird species.
Birdwatcher’s paradise
Every winter, the beel becomes a bustling hub of bird activity. This year, species such as the Red-crested Pochard, Ferruginous Pochard, Common Teal, Lesser Whistling Duck, Oriental Darter, Grey-headed Lapwing, and Gadwall have been recorded at the site. The presence of these birds transforms Roumari lake into a scenic destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
Apart from its avian diversity, the wetland supports various amphibian species and serves as an important breeding ground for indigenous fish. The fish from Roumari lake are particularly well-known for their taste, attributed to the abundance of aquatic vegetation. These fish play a crucial role in sustaining the livelihood of nearby communities.
A crucial conservation site
With its expansive waters, lush surroundings, and calm environment, Roumari lake stands out as a significant natural asset in Assam. Environmentalists emphasise that wetlands like Roumari lake are vital for maintaining ecological balance, supporting local economies, and preserving migratory bird routes.
As winter progresses, conservationists and locals hope that the increased bird activity will draw attention to the ecological importance of Roumari lake and the need to protect Assam’s fragile wetland ecosystems.
