Rs 20.30 crore planetarium in Assam's Kaliabor nears completion, set to boost scientific temper in state
After nearly four years of sustained construction, the ambitious Rs 20.30-crore planetarium project at Shravani Satra in Kaliabor is in its final phase, with work now progressing at a war footing to ensure completion by February 10 this year. The landmark initiative is poised to emerge as a major hub for science education, innovation, and public outreach in Assam.
Conceived as part of the Assam government’s broader push to promote scientific temper and awareness of science, technology, and information technology among the masses, the foundation stone of the planetarium was laid on January 17, 2021. Since then, the project has steadily taken shape as a comprehensive science and learning complex.
Once completed, the integrated facility will house a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, alongside theme-based science galleries and a fun-oriented interactive science gallery aimed at engaging students, researchers, and the general public alike. The complex will also feature an innovation centre designed to nurture creativity and scientific thinking among young minds.
In addition to educational infrastructure, the project includes an auditorium, a science park, a guest house, staff quarters, and a cafeteria, making it a self-contained destination for learning, exploration, and academic exchange.
Officials believe the planetarium will play a transformative role in strengthening science communication and experiential learning in the state, while also enhancing Kaliabor’s profile as a centre for educational tourism. With the finishing touches underway, the facility is expected to soon open a new window to the cosmos for thousands of learners and visitors across Assam and beyond.
