Rs 7.97 lakh project, substandard work: Serious irregularities alleged in MGNREGA works in Kaliabor
Allegations of large-scale corruption and procedural violations have surfaced in the implementation of rural development schemes under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in Assam’s Kaliabor, raising serious questions over the transparency and accountability of flagship welfare programmes. The controversy centres on works executed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at the Uttar-Puwathoriya Gaon Panchayat, which falls under the Kaliabor Development Block.
According to allegations, significant irregularities have been detected in an earth-filling project undertaken at a village grazing ground (Gramthan) located in the Hospital Line area of the Kaliabor Tea Garden in Silghat. The project was sanctioned under the MGNREGA scheme for the 2024–25 financial year with an approved allocation of Rs 7,97,429.
However, local sources and complainants claim that the quality of work carried out at the site is grossly substandard and does not justify the amount released. It is alleged that a substantial portion of the sanctioned funds has been misappropriated, with earth-filling work executed in a manner that violates prescribed technical norms and MGNREGA guidelines.
The allegations have sparked concerns among residents, who argue that such financial irregularities defeat the core objective of MGNREGA—providing durable community assets and livelihood security for rural households. The purported misuse of public funds has also intensified demands for an independent inquiry and strict action against those responsible.
Calls are mounting for the Panchayat and Rural Development Department to conduct a thorough audit of the project and ensure accountability to safeguard public money and restore public trust in welfare governance.
