Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday, June 15 declared that the 2026 Assam Assembly elections will witness a direct contest between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Addressing a gathering of party workers in Mangaldoi, Gogoi accused the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of attempting to disturb the state's social fabric ahead of the polls.
Raising concerns about the alleged involvement of RSS functionaries from outside the state, Gogoi urged the Assam Police to maintain vigilance and register the presence of all such individuals. “Leaders from the RSS, who are arriving from other states, are creating disharmony and tension in Assam. We call upon the police to identify and monitor their activities to preserve peace,” he stated.
Gogoi sharply criticized the Assam Home Department, claiming a breakdown in law and order under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership. “The Home Department has failed entirely. The Chief Minister is exerting undue influence over the police force, preventing them from performing their duties independently,” he said.
He warned against any attempt to “pollute” Assam’s atmosphere in the name of political mobilization for the elections, reiterating the Congress party’s commitment to safeguarding communal harmony in the state.
Commenting on internal dynamics within the Congress party, Gogoi took a strong stance against members he believes have been influenced by the BJP. “If some of our members are infected with the BJP virus, we will administer treatment. And if that fails, we won’t hesitate to carry out surgical removal. Our mission is clear — to eradicate the BJP virus from within the Congress,” he said, drawing applause from party workers.
