Scholarships for Dibrugarh coaching centre students to continue after parents’ protest

Scholarships for students enrolled at the Allen Institute coaching centre in Dibrugarh will continue following protests by parents over a notification related to the scholarship scheme, Assam State Youth Commission member Bhaskar Papukon Gogoi said.

Gogoi said the issue was taken up after parents expressed dissatisfaction over the notification. A meeting was subsequently held with Assam State Youth Commission chairman Taranga Gogoi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the matter, he said.

Following the meeting, the notification cancelling the scholarship arrangement for the current year was withdrawn, Gogoi said.

“The scholarship will continue. The notification for this year has been cancelled,” he said.

Gogoi also said students would not be required to pay any additional fees under the arrangement.

Parents of students enrolled at Allen Institute had earlier raised objections over the alleged withdrawal of scholarship benefits that they said were promised at the time of admission.

According to the parents, several students who qualified through an entrance examination were assured scholarships during the admission process. They alleged that the terms were subsequently changed and students were asked to pay the full course fees.

The parents said the alleged change had placed financial pressure on families and created uncertainty among students about their academic future.

The Assam State Youth Commission took up the matter following the complaints and had warned of a protest if the alleged decision was not withdrawn.

Gogoi said the scholarship benefits would continue and that students and their families would not have to bear any additional financial burden because of the notification.
