Security tightened in Assam’s Kokrajhar ahead of Republic Day, internet services restored

With Republic Day celebrations approaching, security has been significantly stepped up across Assam’s Kokrajhar district in the wake of recent violent incidents that had disrupted normal life. A multi-layered security arrangement involving the district police, Rapid Action Force (RAF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Assam Police has been deployed, particularly in sensitive and vulnerable pockets, to prevent any untoward incident and ensure public safety.

The heightened security follows a tense period in the district after a youth was allegedly killed by miscreants belonging to the Santali community, triggering clashes in which another person also lost his life. The incidents prompted the administration to impose strict preventive measures to contain the situation and maintain law and order.

As conditions gradually stabilised, internet services—suspended for four days as a precautionary step—were restored across Kokrajhar on Saturday. The decision was taken after a detailed assessment by the Assam Government’s Home Department, which has initiated robust measures to restore peace and normalcy in the region.

Additional Superintendent of Police Nabanita Sarma said that the situation is under constant monitoring and that security forces will remain deployed to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations. She also urged citizens to maintain communal harmony and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

Officials confirmed that the situation is currently under control, with normalcy slowly returning across the district as authorities continue to keep a close watch on developments.
