Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly criticised Congress MP and state party chief Gaurav Gogoi over his recent statement that “Miyas are the new Assamese.” Responding to Gogoi’s remarks, Sarma accused the Congress of attempting to “hand over Assam’s identity to infiltrators.”
“If the Congress is so fond of infiltrators, they should send them to Rahul Gandhi’s house,” Sarma said. “If Gaurav Gogoi claims they are the new Assamese, he should accommodate them in his own home. We cannot take them in — there are not enough resources even for the original Assamese. Where will we find land, homes, or facilities for so-called ‘new Assamese’?”
The Chief Minister reiterated that the state’s priority remains safeguarding the rights and resources of indigenous Assamese communities. “When we cannot provide adequate facilities to our own people, how can we extend them to outsiders?” he asserted.
Sarma’s comments come amid escalating political sparring between the ruling BJP and the Congress in Assam over the identity and rights of various communities in the state.
