“Should I hold a gun to a judge’s head?”: Himanta hits back on Zubeen Garg justice row

Reacting strongly to Congress’ claims of delivering quick justice in the case related to Zubeen Garg, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 30, said that justice cannot be delivered by political leaders but only by the courts.

He said that when a matter is already in court, it is not possible to promise justice within 10 days, one month, or even 100 days, as claimed by the Congress. Questioning such assurances, he remarked, “Do they want me to put a gun to a judge’s head to deliver justice?” making it clear that no government can interfere in judicial proceedings.

Taking a dig at the Congress, the Chief Minister pointed out that if the party could deliver justice so quickly, then why did it take several years in cases like the Rajiv Gandhi assassination. He asserted that justice is a legal process and cannot be rushed for political gain.

He further alleged that Congress leaders only visit places like Zubeen Kshetra during elections, and questioned their emotional connection with Assam. According to him, if they truly cared, they would also visit significant sites like Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi Kshetra and Shaheed Smarak.

Defending his government’s role, Sarma said that their responsibility was to file the chargesheet, which has already been done, and ensured that none of the accused are out on bail. He also claimed that while Singapore termed the case as not a murder, Assam Police concluded otherwise, adding that people of Assam are supporting the findings of the state police.
