Silchar administration removes illegal encroachments to make way for four-lane road
The Cachar district administration on Wednesday, August 5, launched a major eviction drive along the Meherpur–Medical Road in Silchar, removing illegal encroachments on government land to pave the way for the construction of a four-lane road.
The operation began early in the morning, with several bulldozers deployed to demolish shops and permanent as well as temporary structures allegedly built on government land. A large contingent of police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was deployed to maintain law and order during the drive.
According to the administration, the stretch had been encroached upon for years, leading to severe traffic congestion and inconvenience for commuters. Officials said the state government had recently sanctioned funds to upgrade the road into a four-lane corridor to improve connectivity and ease traffic movement.
Authorities said notices had been served to the alleged encroachers before the operation, asking them to vacate the land. The eviction drive was carried out after the notice period expired.
Local residents welcomed the administration's action, expressing hope that the road widening project would help reduce traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the area. Officials said the drive was undertaken to ensure the smooth execution of the infrastructure project.
