Silchar civic polls: Congress alleges BJP using threats, inducements to pressure candidates
Senior Congress leader and former MP Abdul Khaleque on September 30 alleged that BJP was using threats and inducements to pressure Congress candidates ahead of the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections.
Addressing a press conference at the Silchar Congress office, Khaleque alleged that several Congress candidates had been pressured into withdrawing from the electoral contest through threats and various inducements.
He claimed that opposition candidates were being subjected to pressure in different ways ahead of the polls.
Khaleque said that while political parties would naturally compete in an election, candidates should be allowed to participate freely without intimidation or undue pressure.
He also raised issues concerning Silchar's development and civic services, highlighting problems faced by residents across different wards and the need for improved infrastructure and municipal services.
Khaleque responded to questions from journalists on the civic polls and other political issues. Local Congress leaders and workers were also present at the press conference.
The allegations were made ahead of the October 3 Silchar Municipal Corporation elections, with counting scheduled for October 6.
