Singapore Assam Association President clarifies role, extends full cooperation in Zubeen Garg case

In his first public statement since the tragic death of Assam’s legendary singer Zubeen Garg, Abhimanyu Talukdar, President of the Assam Association of Singapore, addressed widespread speculation surrounding the group’s involvement and the controversial Northeast festival held in Singapore.

Speaking to the media, Talukdar denied any association between the Assam Association and the yacht reportedly linked to the late singer’s final moments.

“Neither I nor any member of the Assam Association booked the yacht,” Talukdar clarified. “I’m not aware if the North East Festival continued after Zubeen’s passing. Participants from other Northeastern states were also part of the event, so I cannot speak on their behalf.”

Responding to criticism over the perceived delay in Assamese expatriates speaking up, Talukdar explained that the group had acted promptly.

“Zubeen’s mortal remains were brought to India on the 20th. On the 21st, we held a prayer meeting and issued two statements on Instagram,” he said.

Highlighting their cooperation with law enforcement, Talukdar shared that the association had fully supported the Singapore Police investigation.

“We provided our statements multiple times, submitted phone records, and gave testimony during the early stages of the probe,” he stated. “Later, we also expressed willingness to assist in the ongoing Assam investigation and travelled here with due permission from the Singapore Police.”

Concluding his remarks, Talukdar reaffirmed the association’s commitment to truth and transparency.

“We have been fully cooperative from the beginning and remain dedicated to supporting a fair and transparent investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death,” he emphasised, calling for the public to refrain from speculation and misinformation.
