SIT files chargesheet in Zubeen Garg death case, four accused slapped with murder charges

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the mysterious death of Assam’s musical icon Zubeen Garg has submitted a detailed chargesheet before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Kamrup Metro), outlining major developments in the high-profile case. Garg passed away under suspicious circumstances on September 19, prompting state-wide shock and demands for a thorough investigation.

Senior advocate Bijan Mahajan while addressing the media with regards to the chargesheet filed today stated, "According to the 3,500-page chargesheet filed, four of the seven arrested individuals have been charged with murder under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Those booked under the section, which carries the maximum penalty of death or life imprisonment,  include Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, the singer’s manager Siddharth Sharma, drummer Shekharjyoti Goswami, and co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta".

The chargesheet, prepared by SIT members Rosy Kalita, Moromi Medhi and Naba Deka, marks a crucial step in the investigation that has gripped Assam and the Northeast region for months.

"On the other hand, Zubeen’s cousin and suspended APS officer, Sandipan Garg, has been charged under Section 105 of the BNS, which relates to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The provision includes penalties ranging from life imprisonment to 5–10 years with a fine, depending on the degree of intention or knowledge linked to the act", added senior advocate Bijan Mahajan.

Meanwhile, the two Personal Security Officers (PSOs) assigned to the singer, Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Borah, have been charged with criminal breach of trust, adding another layer of complexity to the evolving case.

With the chargesheet now submitted, the next stage of judicial proceedings is expected to determine the course of one of Assam’s most emotionally charged investigations in recent years.
