Sivasagar SSP donates mother’s eyes after her demise
Papori Chetia, the Sivasagar SSP who recently led a major anti-extortion operation in the district, donated the eyes of her mother, late Bijoya Chetia (around 70), following her demise at the government residence on Tuesday, May 26.
According to sources, Bijoya Chetia passed away while the senior police officer was at her office to attend a press conference in the morning.
With the consent of the SSP, the eyes of the deceased were donated for transplantation.
A team from Jeeuti Eye Bank reached Sivasagar and collected the corneas of late Bijoya Chetia.
Sources said Bijoya Chetia, a resident of Betbari Bokabil in Sivasagar district, had been undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness for a long time.
Her mortal remains are currently being kept at the government residence.
Notably, SSP Papori Chetia had on Monday led a major anti-extortion operation in Sivasagar district in which two suspected ULFA-linked extortion operatives were injured during an exchange of fire with police at Bogidol Mola village.
According to police sources, the group had allegedly been demanding money in the name of ULFA from local businessmen for several days. Businessman Lachit Gogoi of Sivasagar had reportedly received an extortion demand of Rs 8 lakh.
