Six cattle rescued after high-speed chase ends in crash in Assam's Dhubri
Six cattle were rescued after a high-speed police chase ended in a crash on National Highway 127B in Assam's Dhubri district, exposing an alleged cattle smuggling attempt and triggering tension in the Balajan area, police said.
Acting on specific intelligence about the illegal transportation of livestock, a team from the Balajan police outpost set up a checkpoint on the NH-127B flyover late on Wednesday night, July 1.
During the operation, police intercepted a speeding Maruti WagonR. However, when signalled to stop, the driver allegedly ignored the instructions, accelerated the vehicle and attempted to flee.
Police immediately launched a pursuit as the vehicle sped towards the Balajan market area. The chase came to an end when the driver lost control of the car, causing it to crash into a roadside shop.
Taking advantage of the confusion following the accident, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot under the cover of darkness.
Additional personnel from Golokganj and Shoulmari police stations rushed to the scene to assist in the operation.
A search of the damaged vehicle led to the rescue of six cattle, which police suspect were being transported illegally. The animals have since been taken into safe custody.
The incident sparked tension in the Balajan market area, prompting police to maintain a vigil to prevent any untoward incident.
Police have seized the vehicle and registered a case under the relevant sections of law. A search operation has been launched to trace the absconding driver and investigate the suspected cattle smuggling network involved in the operation.
