In a significant tribute to the valour and cultural legacy of the Tiwa community, a statue of the legendary warrior Jongal Balahu was unveiled today at the entrance of the Morigaon Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The event marked a momentous occasion to honour the unmatched courage and historical prominence of Jongal Balahu, the formidable king of the ancient Chahari Kingdom, believed to have been situated around modern-day Raha in Nagaon district.
The initiative to construct and install the statue was spearheaded by Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Debasish Sharma, whose unwavering efforts aimed to preserve the heroic legacy of the Tiwa people for future generations.
The unveiling ceremony was officiated by Morigaon MLA and Chairman of the Tiwa Autonomous Development Council, Romakanta Deori. He was joined by key dignitaries including Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council Jibon Chandra Konwar, Superintendent of Police Hemanta Kumar Das, Jagiroad Sub-Divisional Officer Hriday Kumar Das, and prominent members of the Tiwa royal lineage including the King of Gova.
Also present were Morigaon Municipal Chairman Yogesh Tamuli, District Council CEO Ananta Kumar Gogoi, District Development Commissioner Arpa Baglari, celebrated author Maneshwar Deori, and the first Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Narayan Radu Kakoti, alongside several Additional Deputy Commissioners and distinguished guests.
Prior to the unveiling, a public gathering was held at the Tarun Ram Phukan Playground, where Deputy Commissioner Debasish Sharma delivered the welcome address. In their speeches, MLA Romakanta Deori and Chief Executive Member Jibon Chandra Konwar highlighted Jongal Balahu’s legacy as an enduring inspiration for the Tiwa community. SP Hemanta Kumar Das and noted author Mileswar Pator also addressed the gathering.
The cultural significance of the event was further amplified by a traditional Tiwa dance performance directed by Assam Gaurav Awardee Nadiram Deori.
In commemoration of World Environment Day, MLA Deori and DC Sharma led a tree plantation drive along the southern perimeter of the Tarun Ram Phukan Playground.
As a mark of recognition for his commendable role in promoting indigenous heritage, Deputy Commissioner Debasish Sharma was specially felicitated by the Tiwa Mathanlai Tokhra.
