Statue of Tiwa warrior Jungal Balahu unveiled at Assam's Konwar Gaon; language and cultural workshop concludes

A full-length statue of legendary Tiwa warrior Jungal Balahu was unveiled at Konwar Gaon under the Tiwa Autonomous Council in Morigaon district on July 18, marking a significant milestone in preserving the community's history, culture and identity.

The statue, installed near the village playground, was inaugurated by Tiwa Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Jiban Chandra Konwar in the presence of a large gathering of members of the Tiwa community. The event celebrated the legacy of Jungal Balahu, revered as a symbol of the Tiwa community's valour, pride and cultural heritage.

The inauguration ceremony featured performances of traditional Tiwa folk songs by local artists, creating a festive atmosphere. Tiwa Autonomous Council Executive Member Pranabjyoti Machrong and several dignitaries were also present. Guests were welcomed with traditional Tiwa gamosas as a mark of respect.

Local residents said the installation of the statue would help preserve the history and legacy of Jungal Balahu, inspire younger generations, and strengthen the cultural identity of the Tiwa community.

The occasion also marked the successful conclusion of the Tiwa Language and Cultural Workshop, organised by the Konwar Gaon Regional Tiwa Mathalai Takhra, which had been underway since July 5.

Addressing the concluding session as the chief guest, Jiban Chandra Konwar stressed the importance of preserving and promoting the Tiwa language and cultural traditions. The programme was attended by office-bearers of the central and regional committees of Tiwa Mathalai Takhra, along with several prominent personalities.

The twin events—the unveiling of the Jungal Balahu statue and the conclusion of the language and cultural workshop were hailed as a significant step towards preserving Tiwa heritage and fostering cultural awareness among future generations.
