Statue of Zubeen Garg to be built in Assam’s Bokakhat; Minister Atul Bora lays foundation stone
A full-length statue of late Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg will be constructed in Bokakhat, with senior minister Atul Bora laying the foundation stone for the memorial on March 9.
The foundation stone was laid at the premises of the Bokakhat Natyamandir, following a request from local journalists and various organisations.
Earlier, journalists of Bokakhat along with several organisations had organised a public Adya Shraddha (first death ritual) programme in memory of the singer. During the event, they formally requested Atul Bora, who is also the local MLA, to facilitate the construction of a statue of Zubeen Garg in the town.
Responding to the appeal, Bora announced the construction of a full-length statue and laid the foundation stone at the cultural venue.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the people of Assam are seeking justice for the late singer and expressed hope that the truth surrounding the circumstances of his death will come to light.
Commenting on the proposed memorial, Bora said work on the Zubeen Samadhi Khetra (memorial site) has already begun. He noted that a large number of people have been visiting the site, which had earlier made it difficult to immediately begin construction work.
Bora added that the state government has been taking steps promptly and is working to ensure justice in connection with the singer’s demise. The Assam Cabinet has also approved the constitution of a dedicated fast-track court for a day-to-day trial in the case related to Zubeen Garg’s death.
Zubeen Garg, regarded as one of the most influential cultural figures of Assam, continues to be remembered widely by fans and admirers across the state.
