Student’s death after alleged teacher assault triggers protests in Assam’s Phillobari, two arrested

Shock and anger gripped Phillobari in Assam’s Tinsukia district following the death of a Class VII student following alleged physical assault by a teacher at a residential school, sparking massive protests, arrests, and serious questions over institutional negligence.

The incident was reported at Shankardev Shishu Niketan, Philobari, under the jurisdiction of Phillobari Police Station under Tinsukia district. The deceased student has been identified as Utpal Taye, who was reportedly assaulted by a teacher, Sanjeev Sharma, on Thursday. The accused teacher has since been arrested by the police.

According to preliminary information, Utpal Taye was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) following the alleged assault. Despite medical intervention, the student succumbed to his injuries on Friday night, intensifying public outrage and grief across the region.

Utpal, the son of Gomes Taye from Amguri Kopahatoli in Sivasagar district, had been studying at the school since Class I and was residing in the hostel under the supervision of the school administration. Allegations have emerged that the school authorities attempted to suppress the incident before it came to public notice.

The tragedy triggered massive protests at Philobari Tiniali and in front of the school premises, with agitated residents burning tyres and staging demonstrations. Protesters demanded stringent punishment for the accused teacher and a comprehensive investigation into the role of the entire school staff.

In the aftermath, the entire Philobari area witnessed a spontaneous shutdown, as tension gripped the locality. The situation escalated when the student’s body was brought and kept in front of the school gate, with protesters demanding accountability from the school management.

Serious allegations of negligence and failure to ensure student safety have been levelled against the school authorities. Locals have claimed that the assault allegedly took place in the presence of other teachers, further deepening concerns over institutional responsibility.

Amid mounting pressure, the police administration has also arrested the school’s headmistress, Munmi Mahanta, in connection with the case. Investigations are currently underway to ascertain the sequence of events and determine accountability.

The unrest, however, turned volatile at times, with reports of vandalism at the school gate and attempts to obstruct journalists from carrying out their professional duties. Some members of the mob allegedly targeted media personnel and prevented video recording at the site.

Authorities have since appealed for calm, assuring that strict legal action will be taken against all those found responsible, while maintaining law and order in the sensitive area.
