Students turn poultry entrepreneurs as Gohpur school launches its own branded eggs in Assam market
Sankardev Shiksha Niketan, a prominent school in Upper Assam’s Gohpur, has launched its own branded brown eggs in the state market, a product entirely maintained and produced by its Class 11 students.
The initiative gained formal recognition as the Chairman of the school, Uday Aditya Goswami, officially inaugurated the new brand. The rollout marks a major success under the school’s vocational education programme introduced five months ago.
As part of the programme, each student was entrusted with the responsibility of managing 35 hens — from feeding to daily upkeep. Their collective efforts have now resulted in nearly 1,100 hens laying eggs every day, making commercial sale a viable move for the school.
What makes the venture even more notable is the financial empowerment it brings to the students. Half of the profits generated from egg sales will be credited directly to the individual students’ bank accounts, allowing them to earn while continuing their education.
Beyond poultry farming, Sankardev Shiksha Niketan has introduced additional skill-oriented training, including mushroom cultivation, weaving, agriculture, and other livelihood-driven activities — positioning itself as a model for practical education in the region.
School authorities believe this hands-on approach will enhance self-reliance among students and open new doors for their future careers.
