'Switch gears in 2026?': Assam CM's jibe at Congress chief Bhupen Borah over govt vehicle use

The ongoing political banter in Assam took a humorous twist on Friday after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responded to Congress leader Bhupen Borah’s recent comment about waiting until 2026 to ride in a government vehicle.

This comes following allegations made by MLA Akhil Gogoi regarding vehicle ownership. APCC President Bhupen Borah told the media that he hasn’t bought a new car in six years and is "waiting for 2026" — implying a return to power — to use a government vehicle.

When asked about this statement, CM Sarma responded with a smirk, “Why wait till 2026? If he joins the BJP, he can ride it right away. We’ll welcome him!”

This isn’t the first time the Assam Chief Minister has used humour-laced remarks to needle opposition leaders. His quip not only undercuts Borah’s statement but also reinforces the BJP’s assertive messaging as the state heads into crucial electoral cycles.

Bhupen Borah has not yet responded to Sarma’s comment, but sources close to the Congress leader say he remains unfazed by the political trolling.

As Assam’s political temperature continues to rise, the exchange has added a layer of levity — and sharp strategy — to an otherwise serious discourse.

As election heat builds, so too does the war of words — and Friday’s zinger may just be the opening lap of a longer race to 2026.
