Tai Ahom Youth Parishad demands Rs 5,000 crore flood package, warns govt over ST status

The Tai Ahom Youth Parishad, Assam (TYPA) has demanded an immediate decision from the Assam government on the long-pending demand for Scheduled Tribe status for six communities, warning of an intensified agitation if the government fails to clarify its position soon.

The organisation raised the demands at a representative meeting and press conference organised by the Moran subdivision committee of TYPA in Moran.

TYPA’s central leadership urged the government to resolve the issue of granting ST status to the six communities at the earliest. The organisation warned that failure to act would lead to strong protest programmes.

Rs 5,000 crore flood package sought

The organisation also demanded a special package of Rs 5,000 crore for people affected by the recent floods in Upper Assam.

TYPA sought financial assistance for flood-hit districts including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat, which it said had suffered extensive damage in the recent floods.

The organisation also expressed dissatisfaction over the implementation of the government’s announced Rs 15,000 one-time flood relief, claiming that all affected families had not yet received the assistance.

TYPA called for a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package to address the losses suffered by flood-affected people in the region.

New Moran subdivision committee formed

The press conference also saw announcements concerning the organisation’s internal affairs.

TYPA said no evidence was found against former Moran subdivision committee president Abhijit Buragohain and working president Nipon Dihingia in connection with allegations raised against them.

While the two were cleared of the allegations, the organisation said they had been relieved of their respective organisational posts.

A new 31-member Moran subdivision committee was subsequently formed, with Banjit Konwar appointed president and Jayanta Gogoi appointed working president.

The representative meeting also adopted a resolution to organise Lachit Divas at the central level on November 24.

The organisation reiterated that it would intensify its programmes if its demands concerning ST status and flood relief were not addressed.
